Outline
The
college of Agriculture and Biotechnology is one of the leading
agricultural education and research institutions in China,
offering subjects majoring in Agronomy, Plant Protection,
Horticulture, Tea Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology, etc. Current undergraduate and graduate
enrollments are 529 and 591, respectively. There are 236
employees with 155 faculty members, including 3 academicians
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 66 professors and 75
associate professors. The 5 departments that offer both
undergraduate and graduate programs are Agronomy, Plant
Protection, Horticulture, Tea Sciences, and Applied Biology.
There are 8 Institutes established under the relevant
departments. In addition, the college has an affiliated
Experimental Farm. The college now hosts three national key
disciplines (Entomology, Vegetable Sciences, Tea Sciences),
four Key Disciplines at Provincial or Ministry level (Plant
Pathology, Biophysics, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Pomology),
a National Key Laboratory on Rice Biology, and two Key
Laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture (Laboratory on
Nuclear Agricultural Sciences, Laboratory on Horticulture and
Biotechnology). According to the report of the Qualification
Assessment of Graduate Program released by China Academic
Degree & Graduate Education Development Center, Horticulture
and Plant Protection ranked first and second, respectively,
among graduate programs of Horticulture and Plant Protection
in China. As an institution accredited to be funded by the
State “211” and “985” Key Disciplines Program,
the college
has been equipped with advanced facilities. Research
grants have been growing during the past five years and
reached 39 million (US$ 5 million) in 2004. Major funding
agencies including National Natural Science Foundation of
China (83 projects), Ministry of Science and Technology,
Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Provincial
Department of Science and Technology. Over the years the
college has established extensive cooperative relationships
both at home and abroad. The college has enjoyed productive
collaboration in multiple research areas as well as joint
involvement in graduate student training with many
institutions. The college has been recognized as one of the
top R&D institutions on Agriculture in China based on its
outstanding students and faculty members, significant research
and development achievements, excellent facilities as well as
quality service to the society.
