Lecture by Dr. Hongwei Liu, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, Western Sydney University

Title:

Understanding the role of the microbiome in plant stress resistance

Lecturer

Dr. Hongwei Liu, Western Sydney University.

Biography

Dr. Liu Hongwei is employed at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University. His research primarily focuses on the interactions between plants and microorganisms, as well as insects and microorganisms. He currently serves as an editorial board member for journals such as Crop Health and the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment. Dr. Liu has introduced a novel theoretical framework for plant-microbe interactions, revealing the impacts of interactions among bacteria, plants, and soil microorganisms on plant and soil health. He has also discovered a new method for enhancing plant salt tolerance by adding 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) salts to saline soils. To date, he has published over 30 research papers in leading international journals in the fields of plant-microbe interactions, including Nature Review Microbiology, Nature Communications, New Phytologist, Trends in Ecology & Evolution, Trends in Plant Science, and Geoderma. His research contributions have deepened our understanding of plant, insect, and soil microbial communities, offered new sustainable approaches to addressing crop diseases, and provided crucial theoretical foundations for regulating agricultural ecosystem functions.
