Gary Stacey 教授于1978年毕业于美国特克萨斯大学,获博士学位;1981-2001年在田纳西任教授,2001年至今在密苏里大学任教授。Stacey教授对植物与微生物的互作研究领域做出了突出的贡献,尤其在豆科植物与根瘤菌分子互作方面首次证明几丁质是真菌致病因子,而几丁质和根瘤菌产生的固氮因子在化学结构上非常相似,植物接受几丁质和固氮因子的受体属于同一个蛋白家族;最近研究证明,根瘤菌在非豆科植物上通过其Nod因子抑制植物先天免疫反应而建立共生关系。这些研究成果为将来根瘤菌在非豆科植物上的应用提供很好了理论依据。研究成果在Nature、Science、PNAS、Plant Cell等顶尖学术期刊上发表论文200多篇,并获得美国国家专利12项。
