Yilong Liu, a Ph.D student from Fruit Science Institute was invited by Professor Gina Rayat to visit her lab—Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI), a research facilityon the   University of Alberta (UA) campus, from November 8, 2018 to May 8, 2019.

During the visit, Yilong Liu studied the antioxidant capacity of different Chinese Bayberry and pomelo fruit extracts on the mouse Beta cells andneonatal porcine islets, and their anticancer effects on AGS cells. In addition, she visited the animal experimental center in UA to know their working and management model, viewed the resection surgery on porcine pancreas, andlearned the isolation and in vivoculture skills of neonatal porcine islets, immunofluorescence staining, immunohistochemical staining and other techniques. After returning back, she will continue the study of herPh.D project, hoping to apply the methods and experiences learned in Dr. Rayat’s lab to related studies on the biological activities of fruit extracts in the future.
