Eleven undergraduate students from Department of Plant Protection visited “the belt and road” country Malaysia

From Aug 27th to 3th Sep, 2018, 11 undergraduate students from Zhejiang University lead by Professor Chuan-Xi Zhang went to Malaysia to visit University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and some Malaysia cities for the program of Entomology in “the belt and road” Countries. This visit not only strengthens the relationship between Zhejiang University and UPM, but also gives a chance for ZJU students to learn more about the entomological knowledge and different culture in “the belt and road” countries.

UPM is one of Malaysia's leading research universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a focus on agricultural sciences and its related fields. Founded in 1931 as the School of Agriculture, UPM is next to Malaysia’s administrative capital city, Putrajaya. It was ranked as the joint 229th best university in the world in 2017 by Quacquarelli Symonds and it was ranked 36th in Best Asian Universities and the 2nd best university in Malaysia.

During the two-days-stay in UPM, Dr. Adam, the deputy dean of Faculty of Agriculture, gave a detailed introduction of the UPM, especially the Faculty of Agriculture. Professor Norida guided the students to visit laboratories and Insect collection in the Department of Plant Protection and farms. The students were impressed by the culture of stingless honeybees for honey production and the experiments of using Nudivirus to control the oil palm Rhinoceros beetle.

During the later days, the students visited Butterfly Garden in Melaka and the Firefly River in Kuala Salenger, these two world famous insect tourism industries greatly enriched the students’ knowledge of insects as useful resources for human life and of economic importance. The students also visited Maritime Silk Road ruins in Malaysia, and new construction items in Melaka. They were also impressed by the country inclusive for different nations and religions.
