Dr. Fang Qi from Institute of Insect Sciences vsited Newcastle University to participate a short-term collaborative investigation, during 24 July to 9 August, 2016, invited by Professor Angharad M. R. Gatehouse from the Department of Biology in Newcastle University. The research project was focused the recombinant expression and functional studies of the genes encoding venom proteins isolated from arthropods. During this term, Dr. Fang Qi successfully established a system for recombinant expression of the genes encoding the venom proteins from arthropods (especially from Hymenopteran parasitoids), in pichia yeast system. One gene was expressed in this system and its recombinant product was isolated and purified. After that the venom gene was first fused with the sequence encoding the GNA carrier and then recombinantly expressed in yeast system. These two products were utilized for bioassays. The results from these experiments found the basis of the functional studies of the venom components very well. During the academic visiting period, Dr. Fang Qi visited the main labs of the Department of Biology in Newcastle University. Dr. Fang Qi also had very deep discussions with Professor John A. Gatehouse and Dr. Elaine C. Fitches together, who are from Durham University and Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, UK, respectively. They will make great efforts in future on the collaborative investigation of exploration of biological pesticides from arthropods and their utilizations in the pest control.
