University of Edinburgh – Zhejiang University International Undergraduate Summer Research Program Summary Report

The University of Edinburgh (UoE), founded in 1583, is of the top universities in the world and located in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital. UoE is a member of League of European Research University and produced 18 Nobel Prize winners and 3 British Prime Ministers. It is a truly world-class university.
The college of Agriculture and Biotechnology of Zhejiang University selected 5 outstanding undergraduate students, qualified with excellent learning abilities, fluent English communication skills and basic experiment experience, to participate in the 35-day summer research program, from 18th July to 23th August 2014.
Under the instruction of a supervisor and an advisor, each student soon get familiar with the lab, the tools and the protocols with mechanism thereof. In the subsequent stage, the students independently undertook their own experiments and finally got some results. They harvested a lot by the five weeks hardworking, including applaud of their co-workers and supervisors.
Apart from the valuable lab training, the five students also took full advantage of their spare time and experienced the native Scotland culture as well as the Edinburgh International Festival held right in August. Like one of the students said, “We gained a deep understanding of English history, the society and even the local geography.”
The program is of great significance. On one hand, it broadened the students’ international horizons and improved their structures of knowledge. On the other, their communication skills and coordinative working were fully trained and apparently leaped to a high level. More specifically, the research experience in the world top university helped them improve their professional experimental skills, form complete research conceptions and better their adaptability to new environment, which can serve as a highlight in their applications. The students and professors from around the world will be a valuable resource for their future career.
