Dr. Cai Shengguan from Institute of Crop Sciences visited Western Sydney University to participate a collaborative investigation, during 1st September, 2015 to 17th November, 2016, sponsored by ‘Kua Yue’ project in College of Agriculture and Biotechnology, Zhejiang University. The research project was focused aluminum tolerance mechanism in barley. During this term, using secondary ion mass spectrum, Dr. Cai Shengguan and Dr. Liu Rong determined Al distribution in root cross-sections of barley under Al stress. He found that Al-P co-localization in the inner epidermal layer, thereby preventing Al to enter into the cortex cells; He also used MIFE technology to determine the Pi flux from the root tips of barley under Al stress, and found that Al-induced Pi efflux from root elongation zone could be a novel Al tolerance mechanism in barley. During the academic visiting period, Dr. Cai Shengguan had very deep discussions with Professor Paul Holford and Dr. Liu Rong together, and they will make great efforts in future on the collaborative investigation of research on plant abiotic stress.
