Undergraduate Guo Tianyi visited Singapore for Lee Shiu Summer Program. Lee Shiu Summer Program is sponsored by Dr.Lee and Dr.Jennifer Mei Lee and hosted by Chinese University of Hong Kong. There are over 70 students from America, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China divided in 10 groups in which they studied together, explored together and worked together. The topic of program in 2016 is “road to success in the modern world”. Members would make research in three different places to discuss about 5 different topics: leadership and creativity, globalization and cultural awareness, civic society and public governance, environment and sustainable development, social responsibilities and community service. During the 4-weeks trip, members all got deep understand of these categories.

Hong Kong is a city on mountains, but she is still prosperous and bustling, such as busy streets, high buildings. But after exploring the public house in Hong Kong, members realized the other side of the busy. The average area of public house is about 30-50 square meters with 4-6 persons each house. There is more beautiful environment and better equipment in new public house than old public house, but the relationship is not so good. There is also public house in Singapore, HDB gallery showed how the public house developed from slum to modern house and how to relate different nations.

There are many practical activities to help young students to get better understand about poverty and the disabled. Taking Crossroads International as an example, members knew deeper about what poverty meant by acting as a member of poor family. “Dialogue in the dark” made members walk and do everything in the dark which helps them to experience the blind persons’ life. Fortunately, there are many societies to support the poor people and the disabled people such as Enabling Village, workers’ museum. They have their own pursuit too.

Lee Shiu Summer Program 2016 urges the younger to think about the society they lived in and understand social problems by a series of lectures, practice and research. The program also hopes that young students should shoulder their own responsibilities and achieve real success.
