Undergraduate Qiu Zhengjie visits the universities in Singapore

During July 11st to 16th, 2016, undergraduate Qiu Zhengjie from college of agriculture and biotechnology with a specialty of Applied Bioscience visited the universities in Singapore, including National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, and Singapore University of Technology and Design, for a communication program with Singapore.

This program aimed at providing a chance for the students to communicate with the students in the universities in Singapore and explore that how the Singapore’s government build the Garden City. In this trip, the students visited the three universities and the Garden by the Bay.

The National University of Singapore is a public and autonomous university in Singapore. Founded in 1905, it is the oldest institute of higher learning in Singapore, as well as the largest university in the country in terms of student enrolment and curriculum offered. NUS is a research-intensive, comprehensive university with an entrepreneurial dimension.

Singapore Management University is a public, autonomous national university in Singapore that specializes in business and management studies. The university provides an American-style education modelled by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. SMU is ranked as one of Asia's top universities, debuting in the 2015 Financial Times EMBA ranking at #10 in Asia and #36 worldwide, making it the highest ranked new entrant in 2015. SMU's Masters in Applied Finance is ranked #2 in Asia and #34 worldwide by the Financial Times and its Masters in Wealth Management program was ranked #2 worldwide by The Financial Times in 2015, with London Business School ranked #1.

The Singapore University of Technology and Design is the fourth autonomous university to be established in Singapore. SUTD's mission is to advance knowledge and nurture technically grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs. At SUTD, design as a discipline cuts across the curriculum and provides a novel framework for the research and educational programs.

All the university in Singapore do pretty well in the area of their specialties.

Qiu Zhengjie did a survey of the history of building the Garden City in Singapore. From the foundation of the nation, the government pay a lot of attention on the afforestation. In the 60’s, getting rid of the colonial domination of England, Singapore plant quantities of plants for afforestation. Then in the 70’s vertical afforestation begin to appeared high walls, skyscrapers and skyways. In the 80’s, the government combined the economy and afforestation so that they two could promote each other. And finally in the 90’s, they focused on the ecology. They build special gardens to educate citizens have a sense of environmental protecting.

In the travel to Singapore, students met the local people, saw the garden city, feel the international education, which broadened their horizons and will help them for further study in the future.
