The College of Agriculture and Biotechnology of Zhejiang University selected 4 outstanding undergraduate students to participate in the summer research program from July 13th to August 16th 2015. This program is a cooperative project between School of Biological Science of UoE and the College of Agriculture and Biotechnology of ZJU. It offers opportunity for students to improve both English and research ability and broaden their horizon to the world.
The four students chose projects in fields of molecular plant science, microbiology and plant phylogeny respectively, and then they started working in labs of the King’s Buildings and the Royal Botanic Garden. Each student soon got familiar with the lab, the tools and the protocols with mechanism thereof, and finally finished their project under the instructions from supervisor and lab-mates.
In addition to the valuable lab training, the four students also took full advantage of their spare time and experienced the native Scotland culture as well as the Edinburgh International Festival held right in August. The museums, gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens, Castle, Royal Miles and Carleton hill are all part of a charming and unforgettable experience.
The program is of great significance. On one hand, it broadened the students’ international horizons and improved their structures of knowledge. On the other, their communication skills and spirits of team work were fully trained to a high standard. More specifically, the research experience in the world top university helped them improve their professional experimental skills, form complete research conceptions and better their adaptability to new environment, which can be rewarding property in their future work and study.
