On the 11th and 12 th July 2018, the 12th International Premium Tea Competition was successfully held in the Tea Science Department of College of Agriculture & Biotechnology, Zhejiang University.

The Competition is sponsored by the World Tea Union, which is held every two years. A large variety of premium teas from the world's major tea-producing countries and regions were collected to participate in this competition. After the tea is submitted for inspection, the judges will conduct a serious and rigorous review of the tea samples and finalize the list of winners. This year's competition has invited 17 experts from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and India, who formed a 39-member evaluation team including several staffs. A total of 645 tea samples, including green tea, black tea, oolong tea, dark tea, white tea, yellow tea, Sencha, matcha and other special teas, were determined by expert tea-sensory assessors. According to the national standard of China's Methodology for Sensory Evaluation of Tea (GB/T 23776-2018), the sensory evaluation of each sample was carried out in five aspects: appearance, liquor color, aroma, taste and infused leaf. Department of Tea Science, Zhejiang University Professor Shu-ying Gong, Associate Professor Ping Chen, Teacher Zhi-lei Gu, and Teacher Hao-wei Guo were core members of the tea-sensory assessors team in this tea competition. All members of the Tea Processing, Tea Sensory Evaluation and Quality Appraisal team take part in the competition as staff members.

The international premium tea competition has been held twelve sessions since 1999. It has provided a platform for various tea enterprises at home and abroad to learn about tea processing, tea-quality management, tea culture, and so on, which promote the international tea-industrial development. Professor Shu-ying Gong is invited ever session as tea-sensory assessor to attend the International Premium Tea Competition since 1999.
