School fellows, Dr. Xiao-Chong Wu and Dr. Gong-Xiang Chen visited the Department of Tea Science

     October eight,2013,the splendid schoolfellows of Department of Tea Science, Zhejiang University, Dr. Xiao-Chong Wu (Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumor Research Center) and Dr. Gong-Xiang Chen (Expatriate professor of Zhejiang University School of Medicine), both had an academic discussion face to face with teachers and students from TSI at room A730, College of Agriculture and Biotechnology. 

      Professor Hai-Rong Xu, the dean of Department of Tea Science held this lecture.Dr.Wu shared the experience gained from her master degree-study. She drew concludes that not only the abilities of mastering the knowledge, but also the skills gained during the practice were of vital important.Besides, to be patient and having a good plan would be key points to do the research. A straight forward plan allows us to keep a clear mind, and move toward our goals step by step. To be honest, she said, the process of scientific researchcould not always be successful; there can be obstacles and mistakes which would make you down. Dr. Wu thought that the first step of research was a lot of reading, when faced the difficulties, then tried to learn from others and found questions to the problems. 

       Dr. Gong-Xiang Chen shared with us his research and business. ‘Set up life goal, cooperated with interest’ was his life motto. In his opinion, life is a marathon, not a hundred meters. The most crucial things were to care about whetheryour behavior is coincidence with long-term goal, and in the marathon of life we ​​should bear the loneliness and setbacks. Dr. Chen mentioned that IQ was the foundation of success, but not the determining factor, EQ would get performance only in the face of adversity.At last, he shared the life experiences of his friends, and encouraged everyone to adhere to the study, believe yourself, do not give up!

      In the end, teachers and students of the Department of Tea Science had a lively discussion with Dr. Wu and Dr. Chen. Almost everyone asked questions to them due to their academic aspects of interest. The students were inspired by both Dr. Xiao-Chong Wu and Dr. Gong-Xiang Chen’s speech.

 

Xiao-Chong Wu
Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumor Research Center, and Program in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1X8, Canada
She gained bachelor and master's degree at Tea Science Institute in 1982 and 1985 Zhejiang Agriculture University. After that, she got her biological master and doctorate of medicine at University of Texas at Austin, 2006. In recent years she has published more than 20 papers in Nature, Cancer Research, Biological Chemistry, and Cell Biochemistry.

Gong-Xiang Chen
Dr. Chen graduated from the Department of Tea Science in 1982, Zhejiang Agricultural University, and admitted to graduate abroad to Kyoto University,Japan, and got Ph.D. in 1990. In the same year he went to the United States for his postdoctoral research at the University of Kentucky Applied Microbiology. At the year 1992, he participant in the research and development departmentof Procter & Gamble, engagingin human bone growth factors and their receptors, pharmaceuticals, supplies and antibacterial skin protection , hygiene technologies and products.In 2002,he went into the second Affiliated Hospital,Zhejiang University School of Medicine, as a talent leader.
