From Jul.28th to Aug.11st, Undergraduate students Wang Sheng and Qing Qiao visited Kyoto University for the GSA (Graduate School of Agriculture) hosted summer school. The program was entitled International Exchange with Chinese Top-Class Students Aiming for Research Competency Enhancement, and organized under a Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program with support from Kyoto University.

Enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture as short-term international students, the participants attended lectures by GSA researchers -- Professors Ryutaro Tao and Naoshi Kondo, Associate Professor Jinhu Shen, Dr Keiichiro Shiraga, a JSPS post-doctoral fellow, and Mr Yoshito Saito, a master's student -- as well as by Professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa, Graduate School of Science, Professor Junko Kawai and Associate Professor Shikiko Yukawa, Education Center for Japanese Language and Culture, Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS), and Associate Professor Liyou Han, ILAS. These lectures opened a broad international perspective for the students in an academic and cultural perspective.

The pomology lab of Professor Tao presented them with his recent research and provided rich academic exchanges. He also invited them to visit the experimental orchard. Students of horticulture went into fruit-tree laboratory to participate in grape varieties and plant dormancy laws and other aspects of discussion. They also visited the company and learned about the latest fruit and vegetable selective separation device.

In addition, the students experienced Japan's traditional culture and advanced technology by making tofu, attending a tea ceremony, and visiting a weighing machine manufacturer.

Throughout their stay in Kyoto, the participants constantly interacted with faculty and fellow students at their host laboratories, discussing their research interests and other topics, and, just before leaving, delivered presentations on what they had learned at GSA.
