On July 10, 2013, Dr. Autar Mattoo from the United States Department of Agriculture visited the fruit science institute, accompanied by Zhiping Deng, a Researcher of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Dr. Autar Mattoo visited our laboratories and research facilities, discussed research development, and gave a talk, entitled “Molecular Biology for Enhancing Phytonutrients in Tomato Fruit”, which mainly concerned the physiological functions of polyamines in fruit quality regulation and the Hairy Vetch Cultivation mode for promoting horticultural products quality improvement. During this visit, we communicated information about some issues of common interest, such as agricultural sustainability, scientific research, team and students training, and there was a bilateral consensus that in the future there could be more exchanges and cooperation on tomato fruit research.

Introduction of Dr. Autar Mattoo:

Dr. Autar Mattoo has engaged in plant biochemistry and molecular biology research for more than 40 years. His results enriched the basic theory of genetic regulation of interactions between plant hormones, signal transduction pathways and the accumulation of the nutrition components, Fruit ripening, senescence, programmed cell death, plant responses to extreme environments among others. He has served as head of the research team of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-ARS) for 16 years. So far, he has published 146 SCI papers, including “Nature Biotechnology”“Plant Physiology”, high levels journals of botany research, edited 5 books, partly edited chapters in 22 books. As a graduate student mentor, he total guided 32 masters, 15 doctoral, 35 post-doctoral researchers. Due to his excellent reach performance, Dr. Autar Mattoo was awarded the Scientific Achievement Award in the United States Department of Agriculture, ARS Senior Scientist, Beltsville regional optimal scientists of the year.
