Biological Control of Insect Pests of Solanaceous Crops

This site was developed to help organize and disseminate information on the biology, ecology, and management of insect pests of Solanaceous crops globally. Information contained in this site is contributed by all the members from the IOBC Working Group Biological Control of Insect Pests of Solanaceous Crops (IOBC-BiCoSol).

Biological Control of Insect Pests of Solanaceous Crops

The Solanaceae is one of humankind’s most utilized plant families. It contains some of the world’s most important food plants, such as potato, tomato, pepper, and eggplant. The current global solanaceous crop production is facing an unprecedented threat caused by many insect pests. The common strategies for the management of these pests relies largely on the intensive use of insecticides, including neonicotinoids. Alternative means are needed to reduce the insecticide overuse and avoid their negative impacts to the environment, food safety, and human health. Here, a global working group IOBC-BiCoSol was established in 2021 to promote international focus and collaboration, and help disseminate information on the biological control within an ecological management complex of insect pests in potato, tomato and other solanaceous crops.
