About Us

Welcome to the Institute of Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. The Institute of Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology was founded in 1989. The discipline--Pesticide Science belongs to the second-level disciplines of National Key First-Level Discipline (Plant Protection).

The history of research and teaching in Pesticide Science at Zhejiang University can be traced back to 1950s. Since 1952, the course Plant Chemical Protection has been offered in the department of plant protection. In 1970, the research group on pesticide was founded, and started to preside over the cooperation project of nationwide pesticide residue analysis consigned by Ministry of Agriculture in 1973, providing scientific evidences for the establishment of national standards on safe use of pesticides. In 1981, the teaching and research team of plant chemical protection was founded and since that, the research field was extended from traditional pesticide application and residue analysis to pesticide ecotoxicology. In recent two decades, the researches on Pesticide Chemical Biology &Applied Chemistry, Pesticides & Signaling Chemistry, Pesticide Immunochemistry, and Pesticide Ecotoxicology & Pollution Control, etc., are gradually developed. The research interest spans the full gamut of pesticide synthesis--pesticide application--pesticide risk assessment--pesticide pollution control and remediation. Currently, the institute provides quality educational opportunity at graduate level and offers M.S. degree in Plant Protection and Ph.D. degree in Pesticide Science. To date, more than 200 master and doctorate students at home and abroad have accomplished their studies. The institute enrolls about annually 30-40 postgraduate students since 2005.

At present, there are 12 faculty members in the institute involving 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 2 postdoctoral researchers, all of whom has Ph. D. degree. The area of the laboratory is around 1600 square meters, and the assets of instruments are more than RMB 20 millions.

In recent five years, the institute achieves more than 20 programs which funded by the national high technology research and development program of China (863 Program), affiliated program of national key basic research program of China (973 program), national natural science foundation of China, provincial key research programs and provincial natural science foundations, etc. The recent 5-year total funding reached RMB 55 millions. The institute has a total of more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, of which more than 100 papers are published in SCI journals, and a total of more than 20 authorized national invention patents.

The institute has established extensive international cooperative relationships over the years. In recent years, the institute has had a number of co-operative research projects with the world famous universities involving the University of Harvard, Duke University, University of California (Riverside), Cornell University, Michigan State University, Hokkaido University and Wageningen University, and the transnational corporations such as Bayer, Dow chemistry, BASF, and Syngenta, and so on.
