About Us

Institute of Biotechnology was founded in 1988 by Prof. Debao Li, the Chairman of Zhejiang Biotechnology Society. In 2002, this institute and the former Institute for Plant Diseases and Biocontrol were merged to form the new institute under Department of Plant Protection. From 1994 to 1998, the Plant Pathology discipline was a key discipline of Zhejiang Province, and sine 1999, it has been approved as a key discipline of Ministry of Agriculture. Now Institute of Biotechnology belongs to the National Key First-Level Discipline (Plant Protection) that consists of three second-level disciplines, namely Plant Pathology, Entomology and Pesticide Science. In 2011, the institute move into the newly-built building complex in Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environment Science, Zijingang Campus. With the supports from “211” and “985” Project of MOE, and State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology, the institute has been well equipped with ample workspace and state-of- the-arts facilities.

Since 1980s, the institute extended its research programs from traditional plant pathology to molecular plant pathology and molecular biology. There are more than thirty faculty members who are actively engaged in research, extension and teaching missions. Our research efforts focus on fundamental as well as applied aspects of plant pathology and microbiology. Areas of faculty research interest includes plant virology and diagnosis of viral disease, fungal biology and molecular mechanism of pathogenesis, mechanism of plant defense against pathogen infection, plant and microbe interactions, plant bacteriology and nematology, plant tissue culture and gene transformation, genetic engineering for disease resistance, the ecology of benefit microbes and plant disease biocontrol, rice functional genomics with microarray and –omics approaches etc.

The institute provides quality educational opportunities at the undergraduate level on Applied Biology program, and at graduate level on both Plant Pathology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology program. Now the institute has more than 110 graduate students. The graduate program of plant pathology in the institute is at the top level in China.

Faculty members in Institute of Biotechnology have received support from various international and domestic organizations including the National Key Basic Research and Development Program China, National Natural Science Foundation, and the Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest. Our faculty members have earned international reputations and numerous honors for their research and the institute has gained reputation as a major center for the study of plant pathology and biotechnology in China. Long-term collaboration relationship has been established with institutions in countries such as USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Australia, Japan, Canada, Greece, Italy and Korea. In order to meet the future demands and challenges of crop production, our Institute is endeavoring to make major contribution to our knowledge of plant pathology and microbiology.

  

Research

The research in the institute covers many aspects in the areas of plant pathology and microbiology, such as plant virology, plant mycology and fungal diseases, mechanisms of interactions between plants and pathogens, etiology and molecular pathogenesis, applied molecular biology, biological control and applied microbiology.

1.Plant virology and viral disease

The institute features a cutting-edge research program on plant viruses and viral diseases. Of particular concerns are those that cause significant yield losses in China, such as single-stranded DNA geminiviruses and rice viral diseases.

* Genomic structure and gene function of geminiviruses
 * Biology and pathology of negative-stranded RNA virus and reverse genetics analysis

* Molecular aspects of pathogenesis of plant viruses

* Genetic engineering for plant virus resistance

  

1.Plant mycology and fungal diseases

Our research focuses on economically important fungal diseases such as rice blast, wheat head blight and grey mold, and the biology and pathology of causative fungi.

* Functional genomics of pathogenic fungi

* Molecular mechanism of pathogenesis

* Mechanism of fungicide resistance
 * Fungi diversity and epidemiology

  

3.Mechanisms of interactions between plants and pathogens

In this area, mechanisms of resistance in rice, wheat, vegetables and other crops against major diseases such as rice blast, sheath blight, wheat powdery mildew, cotton blight etc., are studied. The following topics are of particular focus:
 * Function of transcription factor in abiotic stress response

* Molecular mechanisms for plant defense responses

* Ultra-structures of fungal infection and cytopathology

* Signal transduction in disease resistance

4.Etiology and epidemiology

The main research areas in this field are identification, detection and epidemiology of pathogenic plant virus, bacteria, fungi and nematodes. Risk analysis of important plant diseases are also carried out. The following topics are of our particular concerns:

* Etiology, detection and diversity of plant viruses

* Etiology of plant pathogenic bacteria
 * Risk analysis of the quarantine diseases
 * Soil-borne diseases of vegetable and rice
 * Etiology of plant pathogenic nematodes

  

5.Biological control and applied microbiology

Our research interests include biological control of the soil-borne plant diseases of cereals and vegetables, microbial ecology, biodiversity of the beneficial microorganisms, screening, detection and isolation of effective substances and their mechanisms. The following topics are of particular interests:
 * Biological control of the soil-borne diseases and the mechanisms
 * Utilization of the Trichoderma and the enzymes for the soil-borne diseases management
 * Ecology and biodiversity of the antagonistic microorganisms
 * Methodology on screening and preparation of effective bio-control agents
 * Studies on beneficial microbial resource and their molecular systemic biology
 * Genetic engineering of the bio-control agents

  

6.  Applied molecular biology

The researches in this field contain isolation, cloning of the disease resistant genes and hormone regulation genes, analysis of their functions, tissue culture of virus free plants, transgenic plants for disease resistant and risk assessment. The following topics are our main focuses:
 * Isolation of plant growth-promoting microbe
 * Genetic engineering for pest resistance

* Characterization of antimicrobial substance
 * Rapid tissue culture of virus free vegetables, flowers and medical herbs

Graduate Program

1. INTRODUCTION

The Institute of Biotechnology offers graduate programs for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in two disciplines: plant pathology and biochemistry & molecular biology. The goal of the programs is to train researchers who will contribute to the further development of agricultural and life science.

The graduate program of plant pathology in the institute is at the top level in China. According to the Qualification Assessment of Graduate Program in China in 2002 (http://www.utop.com.cn), it ranks second on the list of 30 graduate programs of plant pathology in China.

3.2 Specialized Areas

3.2.1 Plant Pathology

Candidate may specialize following areas.

Plant Etiology: Including mycology, virology, bacteriology, and nematology. The research projects are focused on the molecular basis of pathogenesis and the functional genes related with pathogenicity of some important pathogens.

Plant Disease and Control: The study emphasizes on diseases of rice and vegetable crops. The major interests are biological control of plant diseases, including the diversity of antibiotic microorganisms and development of biocontrol agents and their industrial production.

Plant-Microbe Interactions: Biochemical mechanisms and molecular genetics of plant resistance against disease; Signaling pathway in plant-microbe interactions; Defense related genes and their function.

Applied Molecular Biology: Rice cDNA chip technology; Molecular biology of antibacterial proteins; Transgenic plants with disease resistance; Safety assessment of transgenic plants.

3.2.2 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Candidate may specialize following areas.

Molecular Plant Virology: Genomic structure and function of viruses, viral gene variation and evolution, expression of genes with virus as vector and genetic engineering for viral resistance.

Functional Genomics of Plant: Rice functional genomics, gene regulation and signal transduction in plant.

Plant Molecular Biology: Function of plant transcriptional factor genes, plant systemic acquired resistance, molecular aspects for disease resistance and cell biology for plant disease resistance.

4. ADMISSIONS

The International College of Zhejiang University is in charge of enrollment of international students to pursue studies in degree and non-degree programs in various colleges, departments and research institutes of the university. The College also provides service and consultation for international students to ensure their most fruitful and pleasant stay in the University.

4.1 Application and Admission Procedures

1. Fill in the application form.

2. Do physical examination in a hospital according to the items listed in the form of physical examination record within 6 months before the expected date of registration.

3. Submit the completed application form and the physical examination record to the International College. Copies of diploma or certificate and academic records are needed for degree program applicants, two recommendation letters and a resume are also necessary for postgraduate program applicants.

4. Application deadline for: spring semester (Dec. 15 of formal year); autumn semester (Jun. 15).

5. The Admission Notice and the Application Form for Student Visa (JW202 form) will be mailed to the applicant after the confirmation of qualification.

6. Apply for a student visa or visitor visa within three months before the specified deadline of registration at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate with the admission notice, the JW202 form and/or the physical examination record.

7. Register in the specified period in the Admission Notice.

4.2 Entrance Requirements

Master Degree Programs

Bachelor degree holder, under 36 years old, recommendation by two or more professors; for Chinese-instructed students, HSK test passed (liberal arts: level 7; other majors: level 4).

Doctoral Programs

Master degree holder, under 46 years old, recommendation by two or more professors; for Chinese-instructed students, HSK test passed (liberal arts: level 7; other majors: level 4).

Non-degree Advanced Programs (1 semester to 2 years)

For postgraduate programs, master degree holder, under 56 years old.

KEY FACILITIES AND JOINT RESEARCH CENTER

The Institute of Biotechnology Our institute locates in the 6, 7 and 9th floor of Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environment Science Genetic BLDG C, occupying more than 6000 square meter laboratory place. As a key discipline of Zhejiang University, one of the top universities in China, our institute houses and shares some of the national preeminent resources for the study of plant pathology and plant-microbe interactions. The spacious greenhouse facility offer controlled conditions for plant growth. Each floor also has easy access to indoor plant growth rooms, plant growth chamber and tissue culture chamber. The laboratories are extensively furnished with modern equipment. Shared equipment rooms house modern state-of-the-arts instrumentations for micrographing, gel documentation, phosphorimaging, fluorimaging, ultracentrifugation, and more. Additionally, there are several specialized “985” platform core facilities that are in close vicinity and available to all investigators, including confocal microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscope, mass spectrometers, next-generation sequencer, surface Plasmon resonance units, freeze-dryers etc. The institute also co-founds the following two major key laboratories:

lState Key Laboratory of Rice Biology

In 2003, Department of Plant Protection at Zhejiang University and the China National Rice Research Institute jointly established the State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology.

State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology focuses on significant scientific problems and applicable basic researches concerning rice production including rice functional genomics, genetics of germplasm improvement and innovation, abiotic stress response, mechanism of growth and development. The lab has successfully cloned some agronomically important genes such as genes controlling rice tillering and gelatinization temperature, etc.

lKey Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Crop Pathogens and Insects of Ministry of Agriculture

  

In 2006, this discipline established the Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Crop Pathogens and Insects of Ministry of Agriculture..

Research areas include rice disease diagnosis and prevention, rice pest management, molecular mechanism of rice and pest interaction, genetic improvement of rice resistance against pathogen infection and pest infestation, etc.
