  Introduction ¡¡

Research and teaching in Crop Science at Zhejiang University has a long history, with many distinguished scholars worked in this institute. The discipline of crop science was authorized to offer Master¡¯s and Doctorate programmes in 1981 and 1986, respectively. Crop science has been the key discipline at Zhejiang since 1994. The institute currently has the research programmes ranging from fundamental to applied aspects and from molecular to ecological perspectives. As an institution accredited to be funded by the State ¡°211¡± Key Disciplines Programme, the institute now innovates the infrastructure incorporating the crop genetics & breeding and the crop physiology & farming system. With the distinct research feature, the institute has been developing very rapidly in the last 10 years and now recognized as one of the top institutions of crop science in China.

The institute currently has one academician, 12 professors, 12 associate professors, and 15 post-doc and visiting research fellows. Among the professors, the majority of them have the qualification of doctorate degree and overseas research experience. All the principal investigators are active and competitive in the international academic field. The institute has attained outstanding research and development achievements. Many of these research results have not only been published in internationally recognized academic journals, but also been widely cited by other scientists in their research papers or utilized in commercial industry resulting in economic and social benefits.

Currently the institute offers Master¡¯s and Ph.D. degrees in various fields of Crop Science as well as the post-doctorate programme, and enrolls 20-35 graduate students each year. The institute also attracts approximately 10 post-doc and visiting research fellows each year. The institute has been recognized as one of the top R&D institutions in crop science in China based on its outstanding students and faculty members, significant research and development achievements, excellent facilities as well as quality service to the society.

The institute has established extensive cooperative relationships both at home and abroad. The institute has enjoyed productive collaboration in various research areas as well as joint supervision in graduate student training with many institutions in China. In recent years, the institute has had a variety of international co-operative research projects with universities and research institutes from Australia, Germany, Israel, Japan, Sweden, UK and USA, and the multinational institutions such as the IBM. The institute hosted several international conferences. Overseas exchange visits have been frequent among academic staff and graduate students.

The institute has the following priority areas for research and development:

  • Plant molecular breeding and germplasm innovation

  • Bioinformatics and quantitative genetics

  • Plant genomics and gene manipulation

  • Plant development and regulation

  • Crop physiology and molecular biology

  • Production system for quality and safety produces
