Institute of Pesticide and
Environmental Toxicology (IPET) was built in 1953.. Imbursed by
Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, and so
on, IPET involved in ecochemical and ecotoxicological researchs, in
its field research stations, of several key pesticides, such as HCH,
carbofuran, methamidophos, and so on, which was applied in rice
field since from 1980s to 1990s.. These researches settled
scientific foundation for evaluation of hazard being imposed on
human and ecosystem by pesticides. While IPET earned its reputation
by performing these scientific activities. Scientists in IPET put
forward the concept of “Pesticide Ecotoxicology” firstly in China in
1980s, based on tremendous data on behavior and side-effects of
pesticides collected from lab, semi-field, and field.
Recently obvious progress has achieved in many aspects,
such as, residual pollution control, ecotoxicology, computer expert
system, instant residue detection (ELISA), biological pesticide and
“green” formulation exploitation. New characters and predominance
are coming into being.
Main research directions include 1) Pesticide synthesize and
structure decoration, 2) Pesticide formulation, 3) Pesticide
bioassay, 4) Ecotoxicology of pesticide (environmental behavior and
side effect of pesticide on non-target organisms, ecological risk
assessment and methodologies for instant detection of pesticide
residue, e.g., ELISA, and so on), 4) Pesticide pollution control.
Researches on pesticide formulation and processing began in 1987.
Hundreds of recipes and processing has been brought forth since
then. Nearly 30 of them were put into production. Good cooperation
thus developed between IPET and pesticide manufactures from both
home and abroad. Environmental friendly preparations being brought
forth by now include emulsion in water (EW), micro emulsions (ME),
suspension concentrates (SC), suspension emulsions (SE), water
dispersible granules (WDG), water dispersible tablets (WDT), soluble
powder (SP), soluble tablets (ST), aqueous solutions (AS), and so
on. Since 2000, IPET taken on scientific programs, such as “Research
and development of aqueous preparation of pesticides”, “Application
of environmental friendly adjuvants in pesticide preparation”, which
were imbursed by national Ministry of Science and Technology.
Research capacity on this aspect are among advanced plane within the
country.
IPET consists of 23 staffs, including 2 professors, 4
associate professors, 1 postdoctoral scientist, 3 lectures, 1
engineer, and 12 technicians. In addition IPET retains 2 guest
professors (one of them is academician of Chinese Academy of
Science) and 2 part-time professors,
IPET has the most integrated professional labs with total area of
2500 m2, including: 1) Lab of Pesticide Synthesization, 2) Lab of
Pesticide Processing, 3) Lab of Pesticide bioassays, 4) Lab of
Pesticide Environmental Toxicology, 5) Lab of Pesticide Pollution
Ecochemistry, .
The lab of pesticide formulation is equipped with many types of
experimental formulation processing machines, including: high shear
mulser, mill, rotary screw extruding pelleter, double-screw
extruding pelleter, mini-type pneumatic jet mill, high speed machine
mill, Shaking mix implement, Magnetic Stirrers, pH meter, Balances,
Ultrasonic Cleaners, Forced Convection Constant Temperature Ovens,
Bowl-type Constant Temperature Ovens, Vacuum Drying Ovens,
tabletting machine, and so on.
Various middle scale test machines, such as high sheer mulser,
high pressure homogenizer, blender, horizontal mill, and so on, are
also equipped in a multi-function middle scale test lab which could
be used for production techniques research. These machines can be
applied for production of .aqueous preparations, such as EW, ME, SE,
SC, AS, and so on, and other liquid preparation, such as EC, ULV,
OF, OL, and so on.
The room of analysis has equipped with HPLC, GC, laser
particle size analyzer, Zeta potentiometer, surface tensiomete,
liquid-moisture measurement instrument, kinematic viscosity,
conductivity meter, lap centrifuges, solid-moisture measurement
instrument, and so on.
The Bioassay Lab of Pesticide sets up professional insects breed
room, weed test room and germfree room, and equipped with several
sets of artificial climate box and two sets of automatic spray
simulative equipment, which could fulfill indoor virulence test
requirements and could also be used for pesticide mixed CTC test and
selection test of new compound for pesticide.
As the sole authorized collegiate lab plenty of experiments
in terms of pesticide residue analysis, pesticide quality
inspection, and pesticide ecotoxicity are intrusted by Ministry of
Agriculture and by pesticide companies from home and abroad. Result
of the experiments lays scientific foundation for pesticide
registration and for establishment of standard for environmental
safety assessment.
Many research programs being conducted nowadays IPET are
financially supported by National Natural Science Foundation of
China (3 projects), “973”(1sub-project) Plan, National Doctoral
Science Foundation (1 project), National Key-Problem Tacking
Projects in the 10th Five-Year Plan (1 project), and Ministry or
Provincial Foundation (9 projects). In addition to that there exist
2 large-scaled projects sponsored by industrial companies. More than
70 articles have been published. Research fruits included a first
class Provincial Award for Scientific and Technical Progress of
2003, a second class National Award for Scientific and Technical
Progress of 2005, 2 National Invention Patents and 2 National
Practical Patents.
IPET took the leading in recruiting M. D. candidates majoring
in pesticide environmental toxicology at 1981 and Ph. D. candidates
majoring in pesticide ecotoxicology at 1991 from home and abroad in
the country. By now, more than 100 M. D. students and Ph. D.
students have graduated from the institute. They were employed in
state universities, state research institutes, national and
provincial organs, and foreign invested enterprises. More than 40
students are now studying in the institute.
IPET urge to cooperate with scientists and organizations both
from home and abroad!
